Parks Initiative

Glenville Rotary has a long standing partnership with the Town of Glenville to help build and improve the parks within our town. Local businesses are big supporters of the Annual Glenville Rotary Golf Tournament, which typically benefits the parks! Over the years many projects have been completed in our parks, mainly the large Indian Meadows Park off Droms Road.

Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run

A joint project with local Eagle Scout Chris Lacoss resulted in the upgrade to the Indian Meadows trail system with new trails being cut to create a 5K trail run route. 2010-11 Glenville Rotary President Beth Gregory spearheaded efforts to make this project reality, working closely with the Town and the Eagle Scout. Proceeds from our Annual Golf Tourney and quite a few work sessions by Rotarians and Scouts to cut and clear the new trails. Glenville Rotary then hosted what will be come an Annual 5K, the appropriately named "Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run" had its inaugural race rescheduled due to Hurricane Irene but was a great success with over 130 runners taking part! Watch this website for info on the date for the 2012 race (likely to be held in the month of May)

Greater Glenville YMCA / Glenville Rotary Pavilion

What has become a multi-decade project, Glenville Rotary again partnered with our local YMCA. Under the directions of 2009-10 Glenville Rotary President David Hennel, Rotarians volunteered and coordinated efforts with the Town and the YMCA staff to rehabilitate a picnic pavilion located in the woods behind the YMCA and adjacent to the trails in Indian Meadows. Originally built in the late 1960s by Scotia Rotarians, the pavilion was then updated with a new roof in the 1980s during the tenure of Glenville Rotary President Jim Golden. The most recent renovation replaced the support posts which allowed the YMCA to reopen the pavilion for use during its summer youth programs. A Rotary work day also provided some "sweat equity" to clear brush around the pavilion and make it more visible from the YMCA fields and nearby trail. Significant trail work on the running trails in the northmost section of Indian Meadows resulted in the addition of tons of stone and some drainage work to allow residents to be able to use that section of the trail during wet seasons. Trails are open for hiking, walking or running during the warmer months. During the winter they get use as cross country ski trails!

Burnt Hills Ballston Lake - Glenville Rotary Pavilion Opens

Glenville Rotarians celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new BHBL Glenville Rotary pavilion just prior to a State Little League tournament was held in Indian Meadows Park. A joint project with fund raising by BHBL baseball and Glenville Rotary for the construction of the pavilion. Also this project was another great partnership with many local service clubs as the local Kiwanis Club donated picnic tables to be used in this pavilion. The pavilion was a multi year project for Rotarians, first started by President Charlie Palmer, and then completed during 2008-09 Glenville Rotary President Larry Jones year.

Parks Initiative Started in 2008

2007-08 Rotary President Chuck Palmer with Jamie McFarland -
Town of Glenville Director for Parks / Human Services

Press Release (1/25/2008):

The Rotary Club of Glenville is proud to announce a long term partnership with the Town of Glenville to support and help improve Glenville’s Indian Meadows Park! The Rotarians have pledged support for a multi year project with the Town.

Club members are enthusiastic in partnering with other local organizations and have a goal to fund raise and build a picnic pavilion near the baseball fields within the next two to three years. In 2008, the Rotary Club has committed to match donations up to $10,000 toward Indian Meadows Park entrance improvements, for both sidewalks and an information kiosk. Chuck Palmer, President of the Rotary Club of Glenville and Jamie McFarland, Glenville director of parks, announced this partnership at the Rotary breakfast meeting on Friday, January 25.

Rotary is a service organization of business professionals that either live or work in the Glenville area. Members volunteer their time and enthusiastically support community projects such as the Indian Meadows Parks initiative. On Friday, February 1, the Glenville Rotary Club will be hosting a Ziti Dinner at the Glenville Senior Center to benefit the Northeast Regional Food Bank as well as the Scotia-Glenville Food Pantry. The clubs annual golf tournament (held in August) will be a major fundraiser for the parks projects.

Long Term Plan / Schedule

The near term (2008) goal is to work with the town on improvements to the Entrance to Indian Meadows park, including sidewalk work and a new information kiosk inside the park.

Longer term, Rotary is interested in working with other community groups to fund raise and build support to add another pavilion within the park. Most likely this new pavilion would be located by the baseball fields near their concession area.

The Town of Glenville, in acquiring the "Anderson Property" (a large parcel located on the corner of Van Buren and Swaggertown Roads) is investigating the steps needed to add trails to connect this property to the north with the adjacent former Glenhaven School and then connect the school property to Indian Meadows Park. Some trail work and boardwalks would need to be built to allow hiking, walking, or trail running over what could be an extensive path! While this was not originally planned for 2008, if there is sufficient interest, the new hiking / walking / running trails could be constructed this year!

Tax deductible donations may be made to our 501(c)3 charitable organization (the Glenville Rotary Foundation). Our foundation is also listed with many local businesses and may be eligible for matching gifts! Please make checks payable to:
